Promises made must be promises kept when it comes to protecting Iowa seniors’ Medicare and Social Security. While maintaining that promise, we must also recognize that reforms are needed to ensure that these programs remain on viable footing for the future. I am committed to working with my Senate colleagues to find bipartisan solutions that will strengthen and secure Medicare and Social Security for seniors today and tomorrow.
Medicare ensures that seniors have access to needed health care services throughout Iowa. Together, we must take steps to strengthen and improve the program in ways that further promote choice and access for seniors and preserve the doctor-patient relationship.
Earlier this year, I helped pass the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, a key bipartisan reform that repealed Medicare’s flawed reimbursement formula for health care providers.
I am also a cosponsor of the Protecting Seniors' Access to Medicare Act of 2015, which will repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) created by President Obama’s health care law. The IPAB is a group of unelected, unaccountable federal bureaucrats put in place to make decisions about Medicare payments. Health care providers and seniors are rightly worried about how IPAB will affect seniors’ choice and access to needed services, and I will continue to advocate for its swift passage in the Senate.
We must preserve and protect Social Security for the more than 600,000 Iowans who are counting on this program. We owe it to seniors and those with disabilities to have a serious conversation about the future of this important program. The fact remains that more seniors are owed benefits than there are workers to pay in, and this trend is expected to continue. Doing nothing will only worsen the program over the long haul, and it’s why I will work to ensure that we can protect Social Security for current and future seniors.
