Ernst Cosponsors Concealed Carry Reciprocity Bill

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a strong supporter of Iowans’ Second Amendment rights, is cosponsoring the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, legislation to allow law-abiding citizens with concealed carry privileges in their home state to safely conceal carry in other states that also allow it. The bill would not preempt any state law or establish a national standard for concealed carry.

“Individual states, like Iowa, know the policies that work best for their communities. This legislation is a sensible solution to permit law-abiding citizens with legal concealed carry privileges to safely conceal carry in other states that allow it,” said Senator Joni Ernst.

Background:

The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would permit individuals who legally possess a firearm in the state he or she resides, and has proper identification, to carry a concealed weapon across state lines, if certain conditions are met.

The legislation would not preempt any state law or establish a national standard for concealed carry.  Individual state gun laws would still be respected.  All 50 states have passed laws allowing citizens to carry firearms in public, with most states requiring a permit.  In an instance where an individual is prohibited from concealed carry, they will continue to be prohibited under this bill.

The legislation was introduced by U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and is cosponsored by 30 other senators, including Senator Ernst.
