Ernst: U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement is Welcome News for Iowa

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, released the following statement after President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe signed a new trade agreement between the United States and Japan:

“As our state’s third largest trading partner, increased access to Japanese markets is a big win for Iowa’s agriculture community, especially our pork, beef, and ethanol producers. At a time when hardworking folks across the heartland are feeling the pinch from low commodity prices and rough weather, this new trade deal with Japan is welcome news. I applaud President Trump and Ambassador Lighthizer for their persistent efforts to reduce trade barriers and get a good deal for our agriculture community,” said Senator Joni Ernst.

On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly today, President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe signed a trade agreement to open Japanese markets to approximately $7 billion in American agricultural products.
