Ernst Names Small Business of the Week, Northwestern Steakhouse

Throughout this Congress, Ranking Member Ernst plans to recognize a small business in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties.

RED OAK, Iowa – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Ranking Member of the Senate Small Business Committee, today announced her Small Business of the Week: Northwestern Steakhouse of Cerro Gordo County. Throughout this Congress, Ranking Member Ernst plans to recognize a small business in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties.

“Northwestern Steakhouse is well known for its longstanding commitment to serving great food in North Central Iowa,” said Ranking Member Ernst. “I want to congratulate the Papouchis family for achieving their American Dream, giving back to their community, and providing an iconic culinary experience for Iowans.”

Greek immigrants Pete Maduras and Tony Papouchis founded their Mason City restaurant in 1920 under the name “Pete’s Place.” During the early history of the restaurant, Pete handled the business while Tony was the head chef, using recipes he learned while serving in the Greek Army. In 1965, Pete retired, and the restaurant was rebranded to Northwestern Steakhouse. Tony worked at the restaurant every day until his passing at 98 years old in 1991. Today, Tony’s son Bill Papouchis runs the restaurant with his wife, Ann, continuing to honor Tony’s legacy by serving fresh, delicious food to customers. In March 2021, they hosted their first “Wonderful Wednesday,” which raised over $1,000 for Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa.

Stay tuned as Ranking Member Ernst recognizes more Iowa small businesses across the state with her Small Business of the Week award.
