WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) released the following statement celebrating President Trump’s historic Middle East peace deal.
“President Trump is the peace president. This historic deal not only brings the hope of prosperity to a region that has been ravaged by Iran-backed terror but establishes steps towards lasting peace.
“Two years ago, when I woke up in the Middle East to the news that Israel was under attack, it felt as if all hope was lost, but today there is a new dawn that could not have happened without the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, who united our partners and allies against our common enemy: Iran.
“Finally, the hostages who have endured a living nightmare will be reunited with their loved ones, and the bodies of Americans Itay Chen and Omer Neutra can be laid to rest in dignity.
“I look forward to continuing to work with the Trump administration to build upon this historic moment and establish enduring peace in the region.”
Background:
On October 7, 2023, Ernst was in the Middle East and went into Israel just days after Iran-backed Hamas’ attacks to show her support for our ally. Since then, she has kept up the pressure to bring the hostages home.
Following the attacks, Ernst led her colleagues in urging President Biden to focus his full attention on freeing American hostages taken by Hamas and supporting Israel’s efforts to dismantle the threat of Hamas.
Since the attacks, Ernst has returned to the region seven times and met with regional leaders working to secure the release of the hostages and end the war in Gaza.
On the second anniversary of the October 7th attacks, Senators Ernst and Fetterman (D-Pa.) led a bipartisan resolution, including all Senate Republicans, condemning the Iran-backed Hamas terrorist attacks and supporting the forever survival of Israel.
