Ernst Celebrates Nomination of Iowan to USDA Leadership

Glen Smith from Atlantic tapped to serve as Under Secretary for Rural Development

RED OAK, Iowa – Today, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) applauded the nomination of Glen Smith, an Iowa native, to serve as Under Secretary for Rural Development at the United States Department of Agriculture.

“I’m thrilled that a friend and fellow Iowan with a lifelong commitment to agriculture has been picked to serve as Under Secretary for Rural Development,” said Senator Ernst. “Glen is a proven leader who I have no doubt will represent Iowans and all of rural America well. I look forward to working with him to deliver a five-year Farm Bill, elevate the voices of Iowa farmers, and expand economic opportunities for folks in rural areas.”

Background:

Smith was raised on a diversified crop and livestock farm in Atlantic, Iowa, where he was directly involved with managerial responsibilities. Upon graduating from Iowa State University with a degree in agricultural business, he worked for a farm management and appraisal business before starting his own agricultural service business while farming. He was elected Chairman of the Farm Credit System Insurance Corporation Board of Directors (FCSIC) in January of 2025 and served on the FCSIC and Farm Credit Administration Boards after President Trump appointed him in December 2017.
