Ernst Presses Pentagon Officials on the Potential Dangers of the Biden Administration’s Afghanistan Withdrawal Plan

Ernst noted that thousands of Iowans have proudly served in Afghanistan risking their lives to deliver justice to the terrorists who attacked our homeland and to reduce the threat of future attacks.

WASHINGTON—U.S Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a former company commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom and ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, questioned Acting Assistant Secretary for Defense of Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, David Helvey, and Deputy Director of Politico-Military Affairs (Middle East), Brigadier General Matthew Trollinger, on the Biden Administration’s plans to withdrawal from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021.

Ernst noted that thousands of Iowans have proudly served in Afghanistan risking their lives to deliver justice to the terrorists who attacked our homeland and to reduce the threat of future attacks.

Assessment of Terrorist Threat from Afghanistan

Ernst pressed Acting Assistant Secretary Helvey for his assessment on our adversaries’ ability to conduct attacks on America from bases in Afghanistan once we withdrawal—and said that the threat has been significantly reduced because of the United States presence in the country.

Dangers to Afghan Women

Ernst spoke on her 2019 visit to Afghanistan—where she met with Afghan women who were being trained for both clerical positions and military positions—and voiced her concern about their safety following the United States troop withdrawal.
